Wednesday 30th April
After getting set up and settled in our compound, home for the next Eighteen weeks, we had three days before we officially started work and we were keen to explore our local area. Obviously we were doing this partly for ourselves, one of the reasons for getting the CC jobs was to enable us to visit areas of our own country that we had not seen before, albeit we may have passed through a few of them, but we also needed to be able to provide some suggestions for our ‘customers’, who may never have been to this area before. Our first visit was to be to Fort Augustus, a small town right on the Southern shores of the famous ‘Loch Ness’ and of course home to ‘Nessy‘ the Loch Ness Monster ! But there was also something else at Fort Augustus, the ‘Caledonian Canal’ and a very nice flight of Locks once again all operated by Lock Keepers. However, previous posts have raved about the glorious warm and sunny weather we have been experiencing, well our trip today was not in glorious sunshine it was in ‘Scotch Mist’ !!
A very gloomy day but just right as ‘Nessy’ is often spotted in these type of conditions !!
Well we are here, the weather conditions are just right but still no sign of ‘Nessy’ !!
Looking up Loch Ness from the Southern Bank, still no sign of Nessy !!
Looking up river to Fort Augustus and the Caledonian Canal. There are good boat moorings and services for boaters here, Laundry, WC & Showers.
The bottom of the flight of locks
I guess this is the closest thing we are going to get to ‘Nessy’ !!
A hotel barge waiting to exit the canal into Loch Ness.
Nobody said anything about seeing ‘Waterfalls’ here !!
We missed the barge going through the final lock gate but just managed to catch it entering ‘Loch Ness’. With that low cloud and drizzle, perhaps the passengers will get luckier than we did and ‘Nessy’ may make an appearance through the gloom !!
The drive home didn’t look any better !!
Some of the views were still stunning though !!
I know some of the hills around here are steep but I didn’t order any extra ‘Horse Power’ !!
